Where does inspiration come from?

Being an artist is weird. One moment you feel like a genius, and the next you feel like a total failure. I’ve learned over the years not to take either thought to heart, but to enjoy those moments of genius. Take full advantage of them and ride them out. And when you feel like a total failure, walk away for a bit. Literally, take a few walks if you can. Inspiration comes from all kinds of places. I think it builds up in your subconscious based on the past experiences of your senses and when the timing’s right it strikes seemingly out of nowhere. Usually— on a walk.

I find inspiration from nature, graphic design, contemporary ceramic artists, painters, illustrators, and playing with the process. I’ve had so much fun playing with this collection. I like to think I’m a bit of a minimalist, with a touch of maximalist. I love the way colors and textures can play together. My goal with this bunch was to explore different handles and surface decoration. Truth be told— I hated the process of creating handles before. I needed to shake things up and make the process enjoyable. With my next batch I’ll capture more of the process of making these handles in case there’s other curious potters out there. You’ll find these and more on next week’s shop update. Sign up for emails if you want access :)
